“SEAFOOD”, the boat made famous by the cult-classic movie Caddyshack, has been sold to new owners in Rhode Island.
It was first listed for sale this past October in Maryland for $350,000, where the previous owners used it for the last 6 years. “My clients loved owning a piece of movie history,” said Joe Longobardi, the listing broker for Seafood. “They were sad to see it go, but they have a new business venture starting, a charter fishing business, and just no longer had time for the upkeep.”
Caddyshack was first released in 1980, just one year after the 60-foot Striker Sportfishing Boat was built by the manufacturer and delivered to the original owners. The vessel became an icon on the water thanks to its infamous scene when Al Czervik, played by Rodney Dangerfield, stops just short of ramming Judge Elihu Smails new sailboat before dropping his anchor, sinking it. One of the most famous lines of the movie came shortly after as Czervik complains, “Hey, you scratched my anchor!”
Seafood had been continually updated and refurbished since it was first built in 1979, complete with pictures from the movie, as well as a cardboard cut-out of Al Czervik himself. While in Maryland, Seafood was both a day charter boat for cruising and an overnight AirBNB business. The new owners will keep the boat in Hilton Head, South Carolina and will continue to offer it as an AirBNB rental. So if you want to stary overnight in Seafood and re-live your favorite movie moments, keep an eye out online for the new listing!
The new owner, Jay Oliver, is a marketing professor from Rhode Island that loves to travel and fish for Tuna. The buyer’s agent, Ron Jones from Jones N’ Marine, has known Oliver since college and was well aware of his Caddyshack fandom. “When Jay was growing up and his family bought their first VCR, the very first movie they rented was Caddyshack,” said Ron. “He’s watched it many times over the years and can pretty much recite all of the best quotes from the movie. All of his kids have seen it and love the gopher.”
Jay also mentioned that the main theme song to Caddyshack, “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins was the last song played at his Mother’s Celebration of Life Ceremony, which was about a month before I took him to see this boat.
Originally designed as a custom sportfishing boat, Seafood is equipped with everything you need to go offshore after the big ones. The cockpit area features a fighting chair with rocket launchers on the back (a term for rod holders), outriggers for trolling, storage for tackle, and a transom door for pulling in your marlin. And of course, the boat would not be complete without the Bush Wood Country Club flag.
For anyone looking to sleep overnight on Seafood, there are 3 cabins on board, as well as 3 heads. The master cabin features a queen-sized berth with plenty of room to walk around. There is an en suite bathroom with separate shower stall. The other two cabins also feature private bathrooms and showers, along with 2 beds in each for extra guests. Paraphernalia from the movie is perfectly placed throughout the salon and cabins.
(Below: Pictures of the movie hung throughout the boat, including a signed portrait of Rodney himself.)
The new owners will continue to keep “SEAFOOD” as the name of the boat to preserve its heritage. It will be traveling between Block Island, RI., Key West, FL., Bald Head Island, NC., and other destinations. While not being used by Oliver and his family, the boat will be available as a popular Airbnb destination. “Jay just likes to make people happy and see them smile,” continued Ron. “Staying on the boat is a step back in time, one of the many reasons he was so excited to be the new owner.”
